What can be the role of a Peer-Trainer with intellectual disability?

When preparing the training session,
the Peer Trainer should do this exercise by himself/herself
with the trainer.
The Peer Trainer can explain the concept.
The Peer Trainer can help the participants who have doubts and difficulties during the exercise.

What is the objective of the exercise?

To know what are empathic skills and how to be empathic with the other persons.
The empathic skills are very important in a peer supporter relationship, because only when we feel and understand the problems of others from their point of view you can give the adequate support.

What is the method to be used?

Participants try to recognise and understand the feeling of other people by reading from the face, by thinking about the context of the situation and by imaging themselves in a similar situation.
The trainer shows photos of people in certain life situations (for example: a child who falls down and cries a person who tastes food, a man who is scared of spiders, etc).
First, we look at the face expression and talk about it. Then we discuss the situation in which s/he is and then we speak again about how the person feels.
The trainer summarizes: when we think about how the other person feels, we can imagine how we would feel in that situation.

What are the materials needed?

For this exercise the participants can use pictures, drawings and magazine clippings.
