Why should you do this exercise?

It is very important to listen attentively communicating with other people.

This task demonstrates how important it is.

What can be the role of a Peer-Trainer with intellectual disability?

If it is necessary the co-trainer can help to select the participants.

The co-trainer can read the story.

What is the objective of the exercise?

This exercise aims to show how important it is to listen attentively. In this task the participants develop active listening skills. Active and attentive listening facilitates communication.

What is the method to be used?

If a group is large, 6 participants are selected. 5 participants go into the hallway or another room. The trainer or the co-trainer reads a short text (prepared beforehand) to the first participant. After reading the text, the second participant is inviterd. The first participant has to tell what he remembers from the history he has heard. Then, the second participant retells the story he has heard to the third participant, the third to the fourth, the fourth to the fifth, the fifth to the sixth, and the last participant retelss the story to all participants. Finally, the trainer or the co-trainer reads the text once again. The stories are compared.

The task is discussed.

What are the materials needed?

The texts / selected stories are prepared beforehand (duration - 2-3 min.).

Tips for the trainers/additional information

The trainer has to prepare the texts / stories beforehand. The complexity of the text is chosen upon abilities of participants.
