Why should you do this exercise?

Everybody has problems related with their lives.
These problems can have the same reasons and solutions.
But they can also have different reasons and solutions.
To solve a situation it is very important to understand what the problem is.
It is important to be able to identify and solve
different kinds of problems.

What can be the role of a Peer-Trainer with intellectual disability?

When preparing the training session,
the Peer Trainers should do this exercise themselves with the trainer.
It may help if you have some support materials.
The Peer Trainer and the Trainer can do a role play.
The Peer Trainers can talk about a personal problem and
present different solutions that they found.
The Peer Trainer should make sure that the others can speak
and may help the trainer to moderate.

What is the objective of the exercise?

To look at problems in ‘problem pages’ in magazines or online and to consider how to offer peer support.

What is the method to be used?

Select relatively simple problems from magazines or online sites and ask participants how to best offer peer support in that situation.

Select a number of (relatively simple) problems from problem pages in magazines and newspaper and ask the participants how they might approach supporting the person?

This will require skillful and sensitive facilitation.

What are the materials needed?

Magazines/ newspapers/internet sites describing individual problems or situations.

Tips for the trainers/additional information

Initially it is suggested that the problems are relatively simple and within, where possible, the experience and ability of the participants. This can be extended later to more complex situations if appropriate.

The situations can be utilised to allow participants to offer all relevant skills described in the skills folder by tailoring and/or facilitating the situations and the discussions that follow.

Timeframe: Minimum suggested time is 30 -45 min
